Camping is a great way to immerse yourself in nature and go off the grid for a while, helping you reconnect with the simple things in life. It’s a chance to spend some time without relying on luxuries like fast Wi-Fi, big TVs, and super comfy beds and sofas. But there are some essentials that you’ll still need, and obviously water is one of them. So, how do you stay supplied with water while you’re camping?

Use local facilities

If you’re staying in an official campsite or RV park, then the site may have facilities like outdoor taps to fill up water bottles or your pots and pans for cooking. This is ideal for getting water as and when you need it, just make sure to take some reusable bottles to fill up.

Take bottled water

If your campsite won’t have any water facilities or if you’re camping more in the wilderness, then another option is to take enough bottled water with you to last the whole trip. This can be inconvenient, however, depending on how long you’re camping for and what you’re camping in. If you’re traveling in an RV, then it’s easy enough to keep a few large bottles of water in your vehicle. It’s less convenient if you’re camping in a tent, but you could keep some bottles in your car if you’ve driven and parked not too far away.

Natural water sources

Since you’re in the great outdoors, why not look to natural sources of water? But what’s safe and what isn’t? The first two things to keep in mind are that you shouldn’t drink salt water as this will dehydrate you further, and you shouldn’t drink stagnant water as this is likely to make you ill. Running water is much safer, although its safety and cleanliness still aren’t guaranteed.

If you have to drink from running water, like a stream, then look around the area to see anything that might be contaminating it. Or look for signs that it’s drinkable, such as wild animals drinking from it. Collecting rainwater or drinking groundwater, such as from a natural spring, can also be options, but are, again, not 100% safe to drink.

Purifying water

If you do have to collect water from your surroundings to drink, then there are ways for you to make it safer to drink. One way is to simply boil the water and then just let it cool before you drink it. You can also purchase things like water purification tablets to take on your trip with you. You just drop the tablets into your water and let them purify it for you.

Waterfalls

There are so many stunning waterfalls around the world. Even small, trickling waterfalls can look beautiful and bring a sense of calm to you, but then there are the massive waterfalls that are a sight to behold. Of course, there’s Niagara Falls on the border of the US and Canada, made up of three large waterfalls converging together. Yosemite Falls in California is a taller waterfall although not quite as grand as Niagara Falls, but set among the amazing surroundings of Yosemite National Park. And you’ll even find waterfalls in the Grand Canyon, such as Havasu Falls, contrasting red rocks with a bright blue pool of water.

Geysers

A geyser is a point in the earth where a large spout of water and steam periodically shoots out of the ground. It’s an impressive sight, and the most famous geyser in the world is right here in the US, Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. And there’s another in Yellowstone, the Morning Glory Geyser, which is located in a colorful pool of water that appears like a rainbow.

Lakes

The US is home to lots of great lakes, and not just the five that are actually called The Great Lakes. Lake Superior isn’t just the largest of the Great Lakes, but also the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the whole world, spanning three US states and part of Canada. Some other lakes to visit include Crater Lake in Oregon, formed by the collapse of a volcano, Lake Tahoe in California, and the manmade Lake Powell in Utah and Arizona.

Alaska’s ice caves

Water isn’t just impressive when it flows, but also when it freezes. You’ll find plenty of ice when you visit Alaska, including incredible sights such as the Mendenhall Ice Caves near Juneau. You can take guided tours through the caves to take in the almost magical-looking surroundings.
